Coaching Certification Process Non-Teacher Coaches
Basic Information
Only non-teacher coaches need to apply for a coaching license.
Initial License: Temporary coaching license
Requirements:
- Valid First Aid Certification
- Valid CPR Certification
- DASA Certification
- Concussion Certification
- Workshop-Child Abuse
- Workshop-Violence Intervention and Prevention
- Fingerprint Clearance
- School District Recommendation
Temporary Renewals:

2nd Temporary Renewal-5th Temporary Renewal:
Applicant must have completed Philosophy, Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education (must be completed by the third renewal), Health Sciences Applied to Coaching and Theory and Techniques of Coaching for the sport(s) they will be coaching. (These can be done at any time but no later than the fifth year* after the initial appointment as a coach). *An extension of time to complete the coursework may be requested from SED for extenuating circumstances.
For the Temporary license or Temporary license renewal, you must have a commitment from a School District for employment. The School District will enter a Superintendent Statement into TEACH. Your application will not be complete without receipt of this electronic statement.
Advanced License: Professional Coaching License and Professional Renewal (must have held a minimum of 3 Temporary Coaching Licenses and have completed all coursework).

- Satisfactory Evaluation-3 years (Professional Renewal only)

- Fingerprint clearance
The holder of this certificate is considered to be on “equal footing” with certified teachers for consideration of coaching positions.
Apple for the appropriate license on the TEACH system.
TEACH Application Process:
- Go to: www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/teach/
- If a first-time user, click Self-Register to create a TEACH account.
- If you already have a TEACH account click Login to TEACH to access your information and services.
Apply for a certificate:
- Click the link Apply for a Certificate
- Select your certificate as follows:
- Select Area of Interest: Other School Service
- Select a Subject Area: Coaching
- Select a Grade Level: Adolescent-Grades 7-12
- Select a Title: Select the sport you will be coaching
- Select the Type of Certificate: Select the type from the dropdown
If you need to apply for more than one sport, select additional certificates.
Your application must be reviewed by BOCES. Select: I want my application to be reviewed by the BOCES Regional Certification Office. Choose your local BOCES (Onondaga, Cortland, Madison County). If you do not find the BOCES by selecting the School District option, choose by selecting the County.
Check your TEACH account to determine the status of your application.
