Seymour Kindness Chain Celebrates Positive Behaviors

This is a photo of 4 Seymour students each holding a portion of the school's kindness chain and smiling at the camera.Random Acts of Kindness Day is February 17th – but at Seymour Dual Language Academy, students and staff have been performing good deeds for months!

Thanks to a new kindness campaign taking place in the school this year, students and staff have been challenged every day to perform random acts of kindness – and to share when they see others doing the same. Each time students or staff see someone doing something kind, they write the good deed on a piece of paper and add it to the paper chain of kindness which has been quickly spreading through the school.

Students hope that by the end of the school year, the chain will snake its way through the entire building! Leading the effort are the school’s Student Ambassadors – two students each from grades 2-5, elected by their peers to help create positive change in the building.

Third grader Jayda Morales is in her second year as an ambassador, noting that the role has helped her gain confidence while allowing her to make a difference.

“I wanted to be an ambassador because I’m helpful and super kind,” Jayda explained. “I want to help other students learn to be as kind as I am, and I want kids to learn to speak up for themselves. It feels good to show people how to do the right things, and the kindness chain is one way we can do that.”

“I’m shy and don’t talk much, but I wanted to be an ambassador so people can see who I really am: a good leader who takes care of people,” 5th grader Cornelius Thomas shared. “If teachers need help cleaning or setting up chairs, if someone needs help with a math problem… I’m here to help. My goal as ambassador is to help people get along and learn to be more respectful and that’s what we are doing with the kindness chain.”

Student Ambassador advisor Gloria Kimmich said that the kindness chain has not only helped the ambassadors lead change in the school – but it’s also been a way for the student leaders to see the power of their voice.

“Our goal with the Ambassadors is to help our students become more active in the school and encourage them to use their voice,” Ms. Kimmich said. “These kids are leaders in our building and in the community. They’re respected by us as adults as well as their peers. Our hope is that they’ll take these skills they’re building as ambassadors out into the community as well!”

We’re proud of the entire Seymour community for focusing on the positive and spreading a trail of positivity throughout their building!
