STEAM FAQ's

Q1: What are the qualifications for admission?    

A: Any rising 9th grader in September 2025 from any Onondaga, Cortland  and /or Madison County School District. 

Q2: If students are enrolled in a technical concentration, can they take performing arts classes as electives or after-school extracurriculars? 

A: Yes, all students in any Concentration will have availability of electives and/or extracurricular based on schedule.  

Q3: Are Special Education and/or ELL students eligible to apply? 

A: Any rising 9th grade student will be able to apply to the STEAM High School. 

Will World Languages be offered at STEAM?

A: Yes.  At this time, Spanish will be offered. 

Q5: How will attending students be chosen? Is it random, or though applications? 

A: Students will apply based on interest from December 15th through January 31st.  An interview will take place and then a lottery will determine placement. There will be a total of 250 9th graders.  150 from SCSD and 100 from the partnering County Districts. 

Q6: If I am interested or know someone who wants to teach at STEAM, what do I do? 

A: We are looking for certified teachers to teach all classes.  Anyone interested in teaching students, please apply to the SCSD Applicant System.   

Q7: As a parent, where can I get more information/application on the High School Choice for the STEAM High School?    

A: Please reach out to your child’s school. Applications will be available December 15th.

 


 

Q8: How are the typical class subjects (Math, Bio, History, etc.) included along with the concentration classes? 

A: A student will have a schedule with core content classes, as well as integrated core classes in each CTE concentration. 

Q9: How will STEAM students get to school? 

A: Home districts will be responsible for transporting students. 

Q10: For the arts concentrations – especially the performing arts – what level of experience are students expected to have to enter the program? Will the programs be appropriate for students that already have extensive experience in theater dance, etc. in the community? 

A: There will be opportunities for both novice and experienced Visual and Performing Arts students. 

Q11: Will extracurricular activities (sports, music, etc.) be shared with other high schools? 

A: Yes, the STEAM HS will have sport teams and extracurriculars.   

Q12: Will there be opportunities for students to be dual enrolled to earn an Associate's degree at graduation? 

A: Currently, each concentration will offer up to 30 college credits.   

Q13: Is there a cost or tuition to attend STEAM? 

A: There is no cost for families to attend STEAM.
